In rural Minnesota, a fringe Heathen group known as the Asatru Folk Assembly has purchased a local church – and membership is strictly whites-only. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn They worship Nordic, pre-Christian gods and they call themselves a 'folk religion' that only accepts those with northern European ancestry. Their racially exclusive ideology is protected by the first amendment. Amudalat Ajasa visits the church to understand how it is gaining influence across the country and to meet the anti-racist Heathens fighting back to reclaim their religion. Voodoo is an ancient but misunderstood religion practiced by millions worldwide. Meaning 'spirit' in the Fon language, the religion centers around nature worship and communing with ancestral spirits. It’s often stereotyped in pop culture, adding to the fear and mysticism around it but even in its spiritual home Benin, stigma around voodoo persists. Driven underground during colonialism and after independence, voodoo was only officially recognized as a religion in 1996. We go to Benin's annual voodoo festival to explore the religion's past and present. 'Voodoo' has come to represent something evil when it appears in popular culture. 'Black magic', witchcraft – it's always portrayed as something to be feared. But in reality, Vodou, as it's correctly written, is an official religion practised by millions of people. Why has it been vilified for so long? Josh Toussaint-Strauss looks back over the history of Haitan Vodou and Louisiana Voodoo, which is a separate belief system altogether, and its portrayal to find an answer Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► http://is.gd/subscribeguardian Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute Today in Focus podcast ► https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/todayinfocus Sign up for the Guardian documentaries newsletter ► https://www.theguardian.com/info/2016/sep/02/sign-up-for-the-guardian-documentaries-update The Guardian ► https://www.theguardian.com The Guardian YouTube network: Guardian News ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianwires Guardian Football ► https://www.youtube.com/user/GuardianFootball Guardian Sport ► http://www.youtube.com/c/GuardianSportVideo Guardian Live ► https://www.youtube.com/user/guardianmembership Guardian Culture ► https://www.youtube.com/guardianculturearts Further reading: Haiti Unbound: A Spiralist Challenge to the Postcolonial Canon https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt5vjfnr Desire and Disaster in New Orleans: Tourism, Race, and Historical Memory https://www.dukeupress.edu/desire-and-disaster-in-new-orleans Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to Present https://www.amazon.com/Horror-Noire-Blacks-American-Present/dp/0415880203 Why Can’t Black Witches Get Some Respect in Popular Culture? https://www.vulture.com/2017/10/black-witches-why-cant-they-get-respect-in-pop-culture.html The Appropriation of Magic: How White People Demonised Voodoo https://brizomagazine.com/2020/06/15/the-appropriation-of-magic-how-white-people-demonised-voodoo/ 200 Years of Forgetting: Hushing up the Haitian Revolution https://www.jstor.org/stable/40027220?seq=1 The Haiti Reader: History, Culture, Politics https://www.dukeupress.edu/the-haiti-reader Yorùbá Influences on Haitian Vodou and New Orleans Voodoo https://www.jstor.org/stable/40034365 From 'Voodooism' to 'Vodou': Changing a US Library of Congress Subject Heading https://www.jstor.org/stable/41949200 Perceptions of New Orleans Voodoo: Sin, Fraud, Entertainment, and Religion https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1525/nr.2002.6.1.86
The Standard American History Myth treats American Indians as if they were an obstacle in the way of westward expansion and our inevitable march of progress. The film features Merlin Stone, Carol Christ, Luisah Teish and Jean Bolen, all of whom link the loss of goddess-centric societies with today's environmental crisis. This is the first part of a 3-part series that includes The Burning Times and Full Circle. Directed by Donna Read - 1989

This documentary takes an in-depth look at the witch hunts that swept Europe just a few hundred years ago. False accusations and trials led to massive torture and burnings at the stake and ultimately to the destruction of an organic way of life. The film questions whether the widespread violence against women and the neglect of our environment today can be traced back to those times. Part two of a series of three films on women and spirituality, which includes Goddess Remembered and Full Circle. Directed by Donna Read - 1990

This short documentary journeys into the spiritual world of traditional Indigenous medicine, a world inhabited by Dr. Mary Louie (a spiritual leader of the Syilx or Okanagan Nation), and her husband Ed Louie.
